ESR@Work January 2015

EuroSafe Imaging at ECR 2015

The EuroSafe Imaging campaign has had a busy year since its launch at ECR 2014, as the ESR and its partners have been working hard to implement the EuroSafe Imaging Call for Action issued in September 2014 (for an update on the current state of affairs, read this article from the last edition of ESR@Work).

With ECR 2015 only a few weeks away, we would like to inform you of what EuroSafe Imaging-related activities await you in Vienna this time around.

Poster exhibition & information booth
ECR 2015 will again feature a EuroSafe Imaging poster exhibition where the ESR, its institutional member societies, European and international organisations and other stakeholders present their radiation protection efforts. The exhibition will remain open for visitors for the duration of ECR and will be located in the ECR Live & EPOS Lounge, First Level Austria Center Vienna.

For more information on the initiative and how to become a Friend of EuroSafe Imaging to support our campaign to improve quality and safety in medical imaging, visit the EuroSafe Imaging booth in the entrance hall of the congress centre.

Sessions
The wide scope of EuroSafe Imaging is reflected in the range of topics of the six scientific sessions featured under the EuroSafe Imaging umbrella in this year’s congress programme.

EuroSafe Imaging Session 1

Clinical Decision Support: making imaging referral guidelines work for patients, doctors and hospital managers
Thursday, March 5, 14:00–15:30, Room M

The session on clinical decision support will focus on the ESR’s project to introduce ‘ESR iGuide’, a clinical decision support system for European imaging referral guidelines developed in partnership with the American College of Radiology and National Decision Support Company.

EuroSafe Imaging Session 2

EuroSafe Imaging Call for Action
Friday, March 6, 14:00–15:30, Room MB 2

The EuroSafe Imaging Call for Action will be of particular interest during ECR 2015, with a poster in the exhibition and a 90-minute session dedicated to discussing the twelve action items and corresponding milestones and achievements from the past year.

EuroSafe Imaging Session 3

Dose tracking leads the way to dose reduction
Saturday, March 7, 14:00–15:30, Room L 1

EuroSafe Imaging Session 3 will explore the importance of dose tracking for radiologists, and provide insights into practical considerations including the legal situation in Europe, developing a dose tracking strategy and implementing it in imaging departments. The ESR-led PiDRL European Commission tender project on diagnostic reference levels for paediatric patients will also be discussed.

EuroSafe Imaging Session 4

How can clinical audit enhance patient safety?
Saturday, March 7, 16:00–17:30, Room L 1

Led by the ESR’s Audit and Standards Subcommittee, clinical audit has been one of the ESR’s key priorities throughout the past twelve months as it has driven forward the development of audit guidance and an audit tool to be launched during ECR 2015. The session will focus on the ESR’s approach to clinical audit as well as national examples from the Netherlands and the UK.

EuroSafe Imaging Session 5

Physics in Radiology: Good radiation and bad radiation? How to assess and communicate radiation risk to patients and referring physicians
Friday, March 6, 16:00–17:30, Room M

As part of the ESR’s Refresher Courses series on physics in radiology, a EuroSafe Imaging session will be held on the topic of assessing and communicating the risks of radiation to patients and referring physicians, exploring this issue from the perspective of medical professionals, patients and the wider public.

EuroSafe Imaging Session 6

E³ – European Excellence in Education, European Diploma prep session: Principles of imaging and radiation protection
Sunday, March 8, 14:00–15:30, Room N

For everyone planning on taking the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR), the ESR’s prep sessions are highly recommended. One of these sessions will be dedicated to the principles of CT and MRI, as well as radiation protection.
